Where History Took Shape

The Fried Tater Cafe sits just one mile northwest of the Harpeth River Valley in an area once used as hunting grounds by the Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, and Shawnee tribes. As early as 1710, French explorers from Canada and the northern territories settled throughout Middle Tennessee. The land that now holds the cafe has served many purposes since the 1700s, beginning as a trading post between Native Americans and French settlers, marking the start of a long community story.

Over the centuries, the building that houses The Fried Tater Cafe has worn many hats. It functioned as a trading post through the Revolutionary War, later becoming a military registration site for Company A of the 24th Tennessee Regiment. In later years, it operated as a gas station and grocery store, continuing its role as a place where people gathered, exchanged goods, and stayed connected to one another.

When Tennessee became a state in 1796, the area was named Versailles, pronounced “vr-sai,” after King Louis’ hometown in France. During an incognito visit, the King reportedly stayed in the area and later joked with President Andrew Jackson about local living conditions. As English settlers arrived, the pronunciation gradually shifted to “ver-sales,” which remains the local way of saying the name today.

A Place That Brought People Together

Versailles quickly became the center of community life. With rough terrain, few roads, and limited communication, the store served as a drop point, trading hub, and social meeting place. Long before Rockvale was established after 1870, this location played a key role in connecting neighbors and supporting daily life across the region.

In the late 1800s, the Nance family built and ran the first store, helping shape the local economy and community bonds. Today, the Lake family is proud to continue that tradition. By welcoming guests into this historic building, The Fried Tater Cafe carries forward its long-standing role—bringing people together, honoring the Versailles spirit, and serving as a place for neighbors to gather and connect.
